Required Text: SUBJECT TO CHANGE.  THIS IS A GENERIC SYLLABUS.  LOOK ON BOOK ORDER PAGE FOR UP TO DATE REQUIRED TEXTS

1) Project Management: A Managerial Approach Fourth Education, Jack R. Meredith and Samuel J. Mantel, (John Wiley and Sons, 1995)

2) Project Management software: Microsoft Project, Primavera Suretrack, or other

3) Critical Chain, Goldratt, North River, 1997

I.   Student Project:  Numerous professional journals and text report on current issues in project management.  These publications include Project Management Journal, Transactions on Engineering Management, Engineering Management Journal and many other engineering and management journals and text.  Select a topic of interest (from the text or your personal preference) related to project management.  Using a minimum of three current references from journals and text as support, prepare a report on the topic.  Your report may be in the form of an application, audit, or research as discussed in class.  The report will include appropriate citations from the supporting articles, but will not simply summarize the articles.  Selected project will be presented in class.

Suggested Topics for student project:  Let professor know which topic you would like to reserve for your project.

Project Management in Concurrent Engineering Team Building for Projects
Quality Management in a Project Environment Decision Making in a Project Team
What is Re-engineering in a Project Environment MIS for Project Support-Beyond CSCS
Risk Management Managing Conflict in Project Teams
Configuration Management MIS to Support Configuration Management
Change Management          Managing Sub-Contractors
Managing Multiple Projects Systems Engineering in Project Management
Personnel Management in Projects  Maintaining Functional Competence in Teams
Critical Chain, TOC Others

*Each Student is required to submit an abstract of their project to the Engineering and Technology Management web page.

II.  Exercise Portfolio:  Every manager should be familiar with the basic tools of project management.  Each student will compile a portfolio of applications of these tools.  The focus of the applications may be either a real or simulated project of your choosing or homework from the text.  Obviously, the most beneficial exercise would consist of a real project.  One caveat is that the project scope must be suitable for this course and the tools must be actually utilized by students.  Simply turning in documents from a project to which you are actually assigned will not fulfill this requirement without re-evaluation of the material.  (However, you may work with the people in your organization who actually use these tools for planning and control.  The intent is to insure that you have a working level knowledge of the tools.)
